National Park Listing

Afforded the highest level of protection, all National Parks are managed by the National Park Service (NPS) which was created by the Organic Act of 1916 with the mandate “to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.”

National Parks can only be established through an act approved into law by the United States Congress.

There are 62 parks designated as National Parks.

Yellowstone National Park was the first national park (both in the United States and in the world) established in 1872.
